After entering Italy, we joined the Via Francigena pilgrimmage route on our way to Rome. The Via Francigena starts in Canterbury, England and is a walking route all the way to Rome. There is a cycling version of the route that covers the Italian section, which we joined in the town of Aosta. The Via Francigena is much less frequented than the Camino de Santiago - we saw more pilgrims in an hour on the Camino than we did on our whole time on the Via Francigena, but the pilgrims and hosts along the way were very dedicated.
